Rhodes the SUN's Island ....

Rhodes is the largest island in Dodecanisa and the forth largest in Greece covers an area of 1.400,68 square km.

Many legends are connected with the creation of Rhodes. According to Pindar, Zeus prevailed when the Giants decided to divide the land to the Olympian gods. The Sun, however, missing from the division he remained landless. Jupiter in order to avoid the injustice agreed that the land which would emerge from the sea in the next morning will belong to SUN's. Thus emerged a beautiful green island of Rhodes. The sun fascinated by the beauty of Rhodes and bathed in the rays. Since Rhodes is the island of Helios, the most bright and shiny.

In ancient times, Rhodes was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World—the Colossus of Rhodes, a 33m high bronze giant statue standing at the harbour. It was completed in 280 BC but was destroyed in an earthquake in 224 BC. No trace of the statue remains today.
Historical sites on the island of Rhodes include the Acropolis of Lindos, the Acropolis of Rhodes, the Temple of Apollo, ancient Ialysos, ancient Kamiros, the Governor's Palace, Rhodes Old Town (walled medieval city), the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Archeological Museum, the ruins of the castle of Monolithos, the castle of Kritinia and many others.

In 395 Rhodes became part of Vyzantine Empire until it was occupied by the Genoese in 1248–1250.In 1309 the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. Under the rule of the newly named "Knights of Rhodes", the city was rebuilt into a model of the European medieval ideal. Many of the city's famous monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during this period. In 1522 became part of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries.

In 1912, Italy seized Rhodes from the Turks during the Italo-Turkish War. At last in 1947 the Rhodes and Dodekanisa has again become part of Greece.
